Create the Practice of Building Friendships

by Dr. Randy Kamen Gredinger on December 12, 2009

How to build friendships:

  1. Be pro-active. Be willing to take a risk and make a new friend.
  2. Make daily contact with one or two friends or potential friends. Building friendships takes time.
  3. Foster your friendships and put them high on your “to do” list.
  4. Pay attention to which friends leave you feeling uplifted and which friends bring you down. Surround yourself with the friends who leave you feeling better more consistently.
  5. The more varied your circle of friends, the more value added to your life.
  6. Listen reflectively and compassionately.
  7. Articulate clearly and authentically.
  8. Practice reciprocity, flexibility and compromise.
  9. Do not personalize another person’s point of view.
  10. Remember, forgiveness and trust strengthen relationships.

Practice several times daily
